Why you get tired after lunch – and how long-chain carbs can change that

Sound familiar? After lunch, you're suddenly completely drained.

Around 11 AM, you're fully in the zone at your desk. Everything's going great. But then hunger strikes. You grab a quick bite – maybe pasta, a sandwich, or rice with sauce. Tastes good, fills you up. And then? An hour later, your mind is on a mattress. Concentration? Non-existent. Productivity? Forget about it.

Welcome to the food coma. That mid-day slump that doesn't just cost you your half-hour lunch break, but easily another two hours afterward where you just can't think straight. By the way, that's up to 14 hours a week that are simply lost. Crazy, right?

What exactly are long-chain carbs – and why are they so important?

The reason for this energy dip lies in the type of carbohydrates you eat. There's a huge difference between short-chain and long-chain carbs.

Short-chain carbs: The quick kick followed by a crash

Short-chain carbohydrates – like dextrose, white bread, white rice, or refined sugar – are broken down super quickly by the body. The result? Your blood sugar level rises rapidly. You feel energized for a short while. Full throttle!

But then comes the energy dip. Your blood sugar drops just as quickly as it rose. And with it, your energy. You become tired, sluggish, unfocused. Sometimes also irritable and emotionally less balanced.

Long-chain carbs: The constant energy source

Long-chain carbohydrates – found in legumes, whole grain products, nuts, and seeds – take significantly longer for the body to break down into glucose. This means: Your blood sugar level rises slowly and remains constant. No spikes, no crashes. Just stable energy for hours.

This doesn't just affect your body, by the way, but also your character. When your blood sugar is on a roller coaster ride, you're more easily irritated, moody, and have a totally inconsistent energy level. With long-chain carbs, you stay balanced – physically and mentally.

The Cycle: Sugar, Cravings, and Your Microbiome

This is where it gets really interesting: If you regularly eat short-chain carbs, your microbiome – the bacteria in your gut – also gets used to it. They start to crave it. This means: You develop cravings for exactly the foods that give you the energy slump.

It's a cycle. You eat fast carbs, your blood sugar drops after the peak, you crave sweets or starches again, your gut bacteria want more of it – and you supply them again. And so on.

The good news: Your microbiome can also adapt in the other direction! If you start eating more long-chain carbs and fiber, your gut bacteria get used to it – and the craving for sugar diminishes.

What happens to your body in the long term?

Now it's important – but don't worry, this isn't about fear-mongering, but about understanding your body better and supporting it.

If your blood sugar is constantly on a roller coaster ride, your pancreas has to constantly release insulin to regulate the sugar in your blood. Over time, your insulin sensitivity can decrease – meaning your body needs more insulin for the same effect. This is a precursor to type 2 diabetes.

In addition, high blood sugar levels can lead to the formation of so-called AGEs – these are "glycated" proteins that accumulate on blood vessel walls. As a result, the vessels gradually lose their elasticity and become stiffer.

The really good news: With a diet based on long-chain carbs, you can protect your blood vessels, improve your insulin sensitivity, and do something really good for your body in the long term. It's never too late to start!

When do short-chain carbs make sense?

Wait a minute – does that mean short-chain carbs are always bad? No! There are situations where they make perfect sense:

Before or after intense exercise: If you train really hard – soccer, bodybuilding, endurance sports – you need quick energy to replenish your glycogen stores.

In combination with other nutrients: If you eat pasta with vegetables, sauce, and protein, absorption is slowed down. That's better than eating pure carbs.

But: If you're sitting at lunch at 12:30 PM and want to be productive again afterward, long-chain carbs are the better choice.

Our self-experiment: The blood sugar tracker

We tackled the issue head-on and wore a blood sugar tracker for 14 days. The results were striking:

With conventional food – even whole wheat bread – there were constant glucose peaks. Afterwards came the crash, the fatigue, the low blood sugar level.
